As a last minute decision (by yours truly!), we decided to head up the coast of England and go past the "historic village of Clovelly".
Biiiiig mistake.
All these shots were taken by my mom. Can you see how steep that is? I think it had to be at least a 25 degree angle all the way down.
And I thought the hills in White Rock were steep! Yeesh!
This would be about halfway down the hill, looking up another pathway. The best way to get things in and out of Clovelly is, of course, with aid
of a sled. (And people still live there! Woah!)
I didn't know mom had taken this 'til I got back to Canada. That's me in the blue petting one of the famous Clovelly donkeys. Before they
brought Land Rovers in, the only way back up the hill for those prone to heart attacks (like me!) was by donkey. I think the villagers
still use them for helping get goods in and out, I'm not sure.
Hello! That's me, overlooking the bay. I think that was only about 5/8 of the way down. Man my knees were killing me. I paid £4 for
the privilege of walking down here?!
A view from the bottom. It doesn't actually show the village all the way to the top. That's how steep it is. I think I permanently
did something to my knees, because they always start shaking when I see a steep hill. Hmmm!
After that horrendous climb down I decided to treat myself to an ice cream. Blazing hot day + big climb + lack of deodorant + ice cream = a
wasp's idea of paradise. I think I was lucky to escape without serious injury!
Leaving Clovelly behind, we took a detour off the main coastal road and ended up here at the Hunter's Inn. According to my mom, this is where
her family used to come on their vacations. My dad's family came here also, so evidently we had to go in the place. I didn't really find it that
interesting, but I'm glad mom liked it.
Coming back on the road to the Hunter's Inn, we stopped for a moment at a lookout point. It had a fantastic view, so I snapped a couple of
pictures. (Fact: There were sheep everywhere, just wandering on the road and hills. I've never seen that before!)
A not-so-fantastic picture of a ship in the distance.
Yep, you guessed it. This is the shot I used for this site's background. Out of all the scenic shots I took, this one is my absolute favourite. It
sums up and displays the English countryside fairly well, I think. Rolling green hills, far as the eye can see.
Another random shot taken from my seat in the car. I take these just to show people what my mom had to deal with. It also looked really pretty.
We had a bit of a problem deciding where to stay that night. It was already eight in the evening by the time we located this place, the Oak
House Hotel. But my god, the food was absolutely divine. Never, ever, EVER in my life have I had such a fine rib steak. Oh, and the room
was really nice too! I was sorry to leave that place.
And here's the town square of Axbridge, where the hotel was. Pleasant little town south of Bristol.
Unfortunately for us, the post office across the street from our room turned out to be the distribution center for the surrounding villages. So after a semi-good night's rest, we trucked out for the final day of our 4-day road trip. |
