Day 1 - Departure

It's the afternoon in British Columbia. The sun is shining, the birds chirping, and the natives are getting restless.

"MOOOOOOOOM! DID YOU PACK MY UNDERWARE?"

This carving marks the beginning of my trip. This is the Spirit of Haida Gwaii, better known as the Jade Canoe. There's a lot of Haida culture in the airport. I've always liked this artwork, partly because it's just so big.

This was my first time going through the international security gate, and immediately upon walking through, this statue is waiting. It's called "The Traveller". Highly amusing, and strangely comforting that I wasn't going through the same process myself.

This is the waiting area for international departures. I think I can safely say that this was the most comfortable departure point on the entire trip. Not to mention they had a Starbucks where I could get my last buzz before takeoff!

This was taken upon arrival at Heathrow airport. I was really, really stoked to be in England! Finally!

This is the front room of my late Aunt Vera's home, our home base for the entire trip.

Another view of the room, and how we've already begun to trash the place. (ehe.)

This is my great-aunt Vera. The picture was taken during her days as a nurse in an exclusive private hospital.

This would be yours truly! I think this was taken when I was around two years old, but I can't be certain. Aren't I cute? N'awwwww.

The main living room, where I spent many a night screaming at the TV because I only had 5 channels, and all the good shows were only on half the time. There was a pretty good morning show, though, so that was nice.

The back garden. Apparently there used to be hedgehogs and foxes in there, but there aren't any now. All that meanders around there now are magpies and rabid grass-pulling squirrels.

A view of the kitchen, and a shot of my mom. Hi, mom!

This was my room. Nice, cozy, and it came with a cd stereo! Talk about heaven! (Although on a hot day the windows wouldn't open. That was the only bad part.)

Lastly, a picture of me. I think this was taken in the 5th grade. It's so weird to see any picture that I have long hair in!

After arriving, the rest of the day was spent just trying to keep awake for as long as possible so we could adjust to the time. We really had no idea what we were going to do the next day, or the next. At least we were finally Home.
